why we exist

Some people can live entirely on their own. Some people need full-time care. And then there’s the in-between—the people who don’t quite fit into either category. They can cook their own meals, but might forget to pay the electric bill. They can do their laundry, but navigating a lease agreement or handling an unexpected maintenance issue might be overwhelming. They are independent but still need a safety net.

That’s where Unity Housing Initiative comes in.

We exist for the people who fall through the cracks. The ones who don’t qualify for group homes but struggle to live alone. The ones who need a little support, a little structure, and a little community to truly thrive. We provide sustainable, affordable shared living spaces where independence and assistance exist in harmony—where people can live their lives with dignity, security, and the kind of stability that turns housing into a home.

And we don’t do this alone. Some of our residents have caregivers, and in some cases, those caregivers live on-site. These caregivers aren’t our employees—they work independently, chosen by the individuals they support. This means residents get the help they need from the people they trust, and caregivers get to do their jobs in a way that works best for everyone involved. It’s a system built on respect and autonomy, rather than bureaucracy and red tape.

Our roots? They run deep in the world of disability services, healthcare, and transitional housing. Our organization was shaped by people who have spent years—decades, even—working with individuals with disabilities, managing group homes, running thrift stores that provided real, meaningful employment for disabled workers, coordinating direct care services, and navigating the complex world of housing for those who don’t fit neatly into a box. We know the challenges. We’ve seen the struggles. And we’ve also seen the victories—the moments when the right support makes all the difference, when a little stability changes everything, when a sense of belonging turns a house into a home.

That’s what we do. That’s why we exist.

Because everyone deserves a place where they are safe, supported, part of a community that truly sees them, and able to afford a sustainable future.
